To budget for Black Friday, pick one total you can pay in cash before the sales start on November 27. Split it into a list of planned items with a price cap for each. Check price history so you know a real deal, wait 24 hours on anything not on the list, and log each purchase as you go.
Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27. Cyber Monday is November 30. Updated November 4, 2026.
How much do people spend on Black Friday?
The weekend sits inside a much bigger season. In October 2026 the National Retail Federation forecast retail sales in November and December to grow 4.2% over 2025, to $1.013 trillion. Your number has to survive next to gifts you were already planning to buy.
More of that shopping is waiting for this weekend. In the NRF's 2026 holiday survey, 64% say they are likely to wait until Thanksgiving weekend to do most of their holiday shopping, vs 51% five years ago. Decide the number before the ads have had the whole week.
For a per-person figure, use last year and keep the date on it. In December 2025 the NRF reported that Thanksgiving weekend shoppers spent $337.86 on average on holiday items, up from $315.56 the year before. That is what people spent in 2025. Your number is the cash you have.
Online is forecast separately. Adobe Digital Insights, in September 2026, forecast Black Friday online spend of $12.9 billion (up 9.2%), Cyber Monday of $15.1 billion, and Cyber Week of $47.5 billion. Cyber Monday is the larger online day, so a plan that ends on Friday is already short.
How do you budget for Black Friday with one number?
Take the total from cash you can spend with nothing due in January. If it is not in the account on Wednesday, November 25, it is not in the Black Friday number.
Count tax, shipping, and gift wrap inside that number before you split it. A cap that skips the shipping line gets beaten at checkout. If a present has to be mailed, the postage is part of the present.
Split it before the stores open. One lump sum makes each item look fine until the last one breaks it. The two splits below are examples, not survey results. Change the amounts to your cash. Tax, shipping, and wrap sit in the buffer.
Example split for a $300 total
- Gifts: $100
- Electronics: $90
- Clothing: $50
- Home: $30
- Buffer for tax, shipping, and wrap: $30
Example split for a $500 total
- Gifts: $175
- Electronics: $150
- Clothing: $75
- Home: $50
- Buffer for tax, shipping, and wrap: $50
Gift lines overlap with Christmas. If you already have a Christmas gift budget, do not pay for the same names from both. If the cash is not there yet, a sinking fund is how you build it through the year, so next November is money you already set aside.
How do you know a Black Friday deal is real?
Put a cap on every line before Thursday. A named item with a cap can be checked. “If it looks cheap” cannot.
- Price history. Compare the offer with what that same model cost in an ordinary week. The crossed-out number is the store's version of the discount.
- The exact model. A cheaper twin with another model number is a different product. If the number on the listing does not match the number on your list, you have not priced this one.
- The cap, tax and shipping included. When the amount you would actually pay is over the line you wrote, skip it. The sale does not move your line.
NerdWallet's 2026 Holiday Spending Report, from a Harris Poll in September 2026, asked what could make holiday spenders go over. The top answer was “a deal that seems too good to pass up,” at 27%. The same report says 37% will set a budget for some or all of their holiday spending.
A countdown is not a discount. If the item was not on your list yesterday, the timer is doing the selling.
Anything off the list waits 24 hours. If you still want it tomorrow and it still fits, give it a cap. If the offer dies overnight, it was a timer. That same pause is how you slow impulse buying online after the sales end. This weekend adds a clock.

How do you track every order from Thursday to Cyber Monday?
Log from Thursday, November 26, through Cyber Monday on November 30. A cart drops shipping, adds tax late, and forgets the other store. By Sunday the confirmations, the pickup, and the return do not add up in your head.
Log each order the moment you pay. Name it, type the amount, save. In Bud that takes about 7 seconds, and on an iPhone you can start it from the Action Button while the confirmation is on the screen. Then check the running total against the number you set.
Bud is an iPhone expense tracker with no bank linking. Your spending data stays on your phone. Log a refund when the money comes back, or the running total stays too high.
If friends chip in on a shared buy, bill splitting handles their share, and a Splitwise import takes about 30 seconds. Buddy is the AI assistant in Bud.
Log the order when you pay, not when the box shows up. By delivery day, Cyber Monday has already had its turn.
What happens if Black Friday goes on a card?
Cash and debit spend the number you set. A card spends January. Buy now, pay later spends later months, and open tabs hide the sum.
LendingTree reported in November 2025 that 38% of people who have made Black Friday purchases in the past have gone into debt as a result. That is 2025, and it covers people who have already bought.
The rest of the season looks tighter than last year. The TSG and ETA 2026 Consumer Holiday Spending Study found that 33% say they usually take on holiday debt or likely will this year, up from 19% in 2025.
The same NerdWallet report says 38% plan to use buy now, pay later, and 38% of buy now, pay later users expect they won't pay in full and on time, vs 25% of credit card users. If it fits only as a payment plan, leave it.
What else do people ask about a Black Friday budget?
How much should I spend on Black Friday?
Use a total you can pay in cash before November 27, with tax, shipping, and wrap included. The NRF's $337.86 is the 2025 Thanksgiving weekend average, not a target. The $300 and $500 splits in this post are examples.
Are Black Friday deals actually real?
Some are. A real deal is a lower price on the exact model versus an ordinary week, still under your cap with tax and shipping included. A crossed-out price or a different model number is not proof.
Is there a Black Friday budget app?
Bud is an iPhone expense tracker with no bank linking, and your spending data stays on your phone. Name the order, type the amount, and save. That takes about 7 seconds, including from the Action Button.
How do I stop impulse buying on Black Friday?
Shop the list you wrote before Thursday, and wait 24 hours on anything that was not on it. NerdWallet found that "a deal that seems too good to pass up" is the top reason holiday spenders say they could overspend, at 27%.
Track your money in seconds, not spreadsheets.
Bud is free to download, built for iPhone, and never asks for a bank login.
